However, if energy storage is to function as a system, the Energy Management System (EMS) becomes equally important as the core component, often referred to as the 'brain.' EMS is directly responsible for the control strategy of the energy storage system.
Coordination of multiple grid energy storage systems that vary in size and technology while interfacing with markets, utilities, and customers (see Figure 1) Therefore, energy management systems (EMSs) are often used to monitor and optimally control each energy storage system, as well as to interoperate multiple energy storage systems.
This type of energy storage EMS is commonly referred to as a traditional energy storage EMS. However, the traditional EMS cannot be directly used for industrial and commercial energy storage due to different scenarios and cost requirements.
In these regions the potential revenue of ESSs is dependent on the market products they provide. Generally, the EMS tries to operate the ESS to maximize the services provided to the grid, while considering the optimal operation of the energy storage device. In market areas, maximizing grid services is typically aligned with maximizing revenue.
When it comes to energy storage, the public usually thinks of batteries, which are crucial in terms of energy conversion efficiency, system life, and safety. However, if energy storage is to function as a system, the Energy Management System (EMS) becomes equally important as the core component, often referred to as the 'brain.'
