Wind energy systems, particularly those utilizing wind turbines, play a pivotal role in the renewable energy landscape by converting the kinetic energy of wind into electricity. These systems offer a complementary solution to solar energy, particularly in regions where wind patterns are favorable and consistent.
Accelerating energy transition towards renewables is central to net-zero emissions. However, building a global power system dominated by solar and wind energy presents immense challenges. Here, we demonstrate the potential of a globally interconnected solar-wind system to meet future electricity demands.
The proposed system integrates a hybrid solar-wind configuration to power the entire setup efficiently. This hybrid approach leverages both solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and wind turbines to ensure a reliable and continuous energy supply. Figure 7illustrates the voltage and current characteristics of the solar PV system component.
Similarly, the integration of hybrid solar and wind power in a stand-alone system can reduce the size of energy storage needed to supply continuous power. Solar electricity generation systems use either photovoltaics or concentrated solar power. The focus in this paper will be on the photovoltaics type.
Combining wind and solar power contributes to a more balanced and diverse renewable energy portfolio. The integration of energy storage technologies also allows for better grid management and higher penetration of renewable energy into existing power systems. Moreover, hybrid systems bring significant economic advantages.
