Lithium-ion batteries, known for their prevalence in portable electronics and electric vehicles, represent just one type among a diverse range of chemistries, including lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, and sodium-sulfur.

The simplest form in concept. Mechanical storage encompasses systems that store energy power in the forms of kinetic or potential energy such as flywheels, which store rotational energy, and compressed air energy storage systems.
There are several approaches to classifying energy storage systems. The most common approach is classification according to physical form of energy and basic operating principle: electric (electromagnetic), electrochemical/chemical, mechanical, thermal.
Among the prominent types of mechanical energy storage are Pumped Hydroelectric Energy Storage (PHES), Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), Flywheel Energy Storage (FES), and Gravity Energy Storage (GES).
They are divided among the three energy storage processes: charging (converting energy), storing (holding energy), and discharging (converting energy). In the following discussion, these parameters are categorized and defined in terms of power, energy, and other criteria.
