In September 2021, the LCOE of rooftop PV systems in Saudi Arabia ranged from 0.05 to 0.08 $/kWh. By 2020, the installed solar PV capacity in Saudi Arabia had grown to 5.6 GW, with distributed solar PV systems, including rooftops, accounting for 2.6 GW of this total capacity.
This study has provided valuable insights into the utilisation, potential, and challenges of distributed PV systems in Saudi Arabia, offering findings that are applicable to many MENA countries with similar climate conditions. By analysing UF, PR, energy savings, electricity rates, and economic viability, several key conclusions have emerged.
The current state of distributed PV systems in Saudi Arabia In 2021, homes powered by solar energy constituted approximately 2.02 % of all residential properties in Saudi Arabia. The Riyadh region led with the highest proportion of solar energy adoption at approximately 3.34 %, followed by Makkah at 2.52 % and the Eastern Province at 0.98 %.
The analysis was restricted to rooftops in residential, mosque, shopping mall, and health care buildings only. Following the quantification of the rooftop area, the upper limit of rooftop solar PV capacity that can be deployed in the city of Riyadh was found to be 4.34 GW.
The research findings indicate that it is feasible to establish an economical PV system in Riyadh, offering a 77 % PR and a normalised LCOE of 0.061 USD/kWh. This setup entails an ROI period of 16.8 years and involves a CAPEX of USD 3,982,655.
Based on the power to area ratio of solar PV modules, it was found that the maximum rooftop PV capacity that can be deployed in Riyadh is 4.34 GW, where this capacity includes residential, mosque, mall, and health care buildings only. The latter numerical finding is an upper limit that does not account for economic or technical limitations.
