It also briefly covers alternative grid-scale battery technologies, including flow batteries, zinc-based batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and solid-state batteries.
In this Review, we describe BESTs being developed for grid-scale energy storage, including high-energy, aqueous, redox flow, high-temperature and gas batteries. Battery technologies support various power system services, including providing grid support services and preventing curtailment.
The rise in renewable energy utilization is increasing demand for battery energy-storage technologies (BESTs). BESTs based on lithium-ion batteries are being developed and deployed. However, this technology alone does not meet all the requirements for grid-scale energy storage.
However, their energy density is much lower as compared to other lithium-ion batteries . Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO 4) is the predominant choice for grid-scale energy storage projects throughout the United States. LG Chem, CATL, BYD, and Samsung are some of the key players in the grid-scale battery storage technology .
Prospective avenues for future research in the field of grid-tied modular battery energy storage systems. In the past decade, the implementation of battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a modular design has grown significantly, proving to be highly advantageous for large-scale grid-tied applications.
