A modified solar humidification–dehumidification desalination system based on hollow fiber membrane is proposed to achieve lower energy consumption. A dynamic model of this system is given and experimentally validated for daily practical operation. The transient performance during the startup period is analysed.
Transient behavior of the system is analysed by the model during the startup period. Both SWP and startup time decrease with shorter mean pore diameters, the lower porosity of the membrane, and higher packing fractions of the humidifier. SWP can be increased with the growth of solar collector areas, while the startup time also prolongs.
The humidifier as one heat and mass exchanger is a key device in the desalination system. Micro structures of the humidifier play an important role in the transient performance of this system. Effects of the mean pore diameter of the membrane on the SWP and startup time are first discussed.
Adjustment of the flow rates of seawater and cooling water for the desalination system during the daytime. As the solar radiation and environmental temperature increase, more heat and moisture transfer occurs between the seawater and air in the humidifier. This increases the cooling load for air dehumidification in the dehumidifier.
The Humidification Dehumidification Desalination (HDH) process is a modified version of solar stills used to produce water in small scales for remote areas using solar or waste heat as a source. It is called HDH process.
