With its self-contained energy storage and rapid deployment capabilities, high-power ESS mitigates these challenges, allowing military forces to operate with increased autonomy and reduced dependence on external resources [96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103].
Pumped Hydroenergy Storage (PHES) Pumped hydroenergy storage (PHES) is a proven and widely adopted technology in renewable energy storage. This system plays a pivotal role in mitigating the intermittency of renewable energy sources by storing excess electricity during periods of low demand and releasing it when demand is high, as shown in Figure 1.
These technologies' quick response times allow them to inject or absorb power quickly, controlling voltage levels within predetermined bounds. Storage devices can minimize the impact on stored actual energy by continually providing reactive power at the grid frequency by utilizing four-quadrant power converters.
In this context, a battery energy storage system (BESS) is a practical addition, offering the capacity to efficiently compensate for gradual power variations. Hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) leverage the synergies between energy storage devices with complementary characteristics, such as batteries and ultracapacitors.
