A supercapacitor is an enhanced version of a conventional capacitor that has high capacitance and low internal resistance that opens the space for large power density. Besides, the difference in charge storage mechanism of supercapacitor expands its energy density compared to a conventional capacitor and the out-turn of the process.

This hybrid setup takes advantage of the high power density of the supercapacitors and high energy density of other energy storage technologies. Theoretically, these hybrid pairings are beneficial; however, more work is needed on the power electronics and controls to assess and prove that hybridization will provide benefits in practice.

Since supercapacitor has low energy density but high-power density, thus it is used as a moderate-term energy storage device. The power density of an energy storage device refers to how fast the energy is transferred over a specific volume, while energy density refers to how much energy is stored in a specific area over its volume.

This is because electricity generation using renewable resources faces uncertainty issues in getting constant supply of energy which affects the energy generation quantity and electricity supply to consumers. Thus, supercapacitors are often used to smooth the energy supply during the peak demand and when the energy supply is low.

Within the United States, it is currently challenging to acquire the supercapacitors appropriate for grid applications. A large part of the cost of supercapacitors comes from the active carbon material that is produced from char (incomplete combustion of natural gas and oils) and biochar products.
