As a new type of high energy density flow battery system, lithium-ion semi-solid flow batteries (Li-SSFBs) combine the features of both flow batteries and lithium-ion batteries and show the advantages of decoupling power and capacity. Moreover, Li-SSFBs typically can achieve much higher energy density while maintaining a lower cost.
Why This Technology? Semi-solid-state batteries are positioned between liquid-based lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which use flammable liquid electrolytes, and all-solid-state batteries. They offer higher safety and energy density than liquid-based LIBs while having lower mass-production challenges compared to all-solid-state batteries.
Compared to existing lithium batteries, the semi-solid lithium battery can reduce material costs by about 40% and shorten the manufacturing process by a third. Compared with all-solid-state batteries, it has fewer technical problems, achieves high security and high density, now people pay more attention to it.
Abstract: Semi-solid flow battery(SSFBs) is a critical technology for large-scale energy storage due to their promising characteristics of high energy density and design flexibility. Recently, tremendous research efforts have been made to design lithium-based SSFBs(Li-SSFBs).
The use of the oxide solid-state electrolyte Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4) 3 (LATP) and the development of semi-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (SSSLIBs) may offer a viable solution to bridge the technological gap between liquid and solid-state batteries and address these challenges.
On the other hand, sulfide-based solid electrolytes, in which Japanese companies lead globally, have high ionic conductivity and soft material properties, making it largely unnecessary to develop them into semi-solid-state batteries, as they are often directly implemented as all-solid-state batteries.
