I'm designing a full-fledged battery management solution for a 2S Li-po battery pack in a custom consumer electronics device. The peak current draw can be up to 4A, the average is around 0.5A (uC, motors, LEDs). The battery pack I use is a bare 2S puch cell pack with no internal protection circuit.
In 2S battery applications with one or two replaceable cells, the battery cells can have very different voltages because replacement batteries can come from anywhere, at any state of charge. Traditional multi-cell chargers only monitor the total voltage of series-connected cells; the charger does not measure each individual cell voltage.
Initially charging takes place in the current mode and after reaching the target voltage the charging goes into voltage mode. At the moment the current is small, the battery is charged. The typical target voltage of a 2S battery is usually 8.4V (note that target voltage is not the same as the nominal voltage as it is 7.4V typical).
A two-cells-in-series (2S) battery configuration is a good solution to this problem. Using a 5-V USB adapter to charge a 2S battery enables you to use the same adapter across products and increases cost savings. However, in order to maximize the benefits of a 5-V USB and 2S configuration, cell balancing is required.
Connect the 2S Li-Ion/Lipo battery to the charger circuit. Ensure correct polarity (+/-) else circuit will be fried within seconds Now the red LED (CHRG/CHGD) lights up instantly to indicate correct charging process. If the battery is a fully-charged one, or a faulty one, the LED will not lights up.
